For our second project in my Video Production II course, we partnered up and had to create a "Visual Poem". We chose from a list of potential poems that we then had to sit down and interpret into a visual film. We could take the poems in their literal form, find metaphors, or evern just use them for inspiration to create something completely unique.
Stephanie Lamb and I partnered together using the poem "Bare" bySouvankham Thammavongsa. We sat with the poem for qutie a while, trying to find its mood and interpret excerpte from it. We loved the idea of finding freedom in one's natural body and contrasting that with covering it up and hiding it away. We thought of expressing the idea through dance and contrasting two elements of hiding onesself and finding onesself.
This idea evolved further into finding autonomy in dance and a freedom from a violent controlling relationship. As we chose not to use any words - from the poem or otherwise - we had to make the message clear simply through imagery.
With only two days available for production, we worked tight with two scenes and two actors. We planned as much as we could in pre-production and worked quickly through production. Post-production is where we were able to breathe with the footage and find the rhythm we were looking for.
The process was very organic and fluid between us and I feel that comes across well in the film.
